Veggie Friendly Restaurants Abroad

So far the list includes restaurants from Thailand, Hong Kong, New York and Zurich

THAILAND

Vegetarian friendly restaurants in Thailand:

Koh Samui

KUSH BAR & RESTAURANT (Location: 20/21 Moo 3, Chaweng)

Kush is a friendly and modern indian and thai restaurant in Koh Samui. The restaurant gives a nice break from the usual thai and italian cuisine readily available on the island. Although there are vegetarian options available, the food is not spectacular but is worth a visit because of the friendly and down to earth staff.

OCEAN 11 BAR & RESTAURANT (Location: 23 Moo 4, Bangrak Bhoput)

Ocean 11 offers high end italian and thai food. The menu provides limited vegetarian food, as a main course the only option is gnocci. Although the kitchen staff are more then accommodating to make a tasty green curry. Ocean 11 is located on the beach front, with great views of the sea.

Phuket

BALUCHI (Location: Horizon Beach Resort, Patong)

This restaurant was described as an award winning indian restaurant and it is no wonder why. The food is delicious authentic indian food, with a wide variety of dishes available. The price of the dishes is reasonable too, so we could afford to order two dishes each (with the food being so tasty, it would be a shame not to). Their daal baluchi is one of their and does not disappoint. My only regret is that we only managed to go there once!

Bangkok

CABBAGES AND CONDOMS (Location: 6 Soi 12, Sukhumvit Road, Bangkok)

Cabbages and Condoms is a great restaurant off the popular Sukhumvit Road. It is literally adorned in condoms, which you have to see to believe. There is an open air part to the restaurant, where you can dine under multi-coloured lighted trees. There is a wide variety of vegetarian food, but be warned the food is spicy. Their vegetarian soups were a personal favourite. An added bonus is that all proceeds from the restaurant go to a good cause, the Population and Community Development Centre.

NEW YORK

Vegetarian friendly restaurants in New York:

CHIPOTLE (Location: throughout the US)

On my first visit to the Big Apple, I spent pretty much my entire holiday seeing all the sights New York had to offer and shopping. As I was on the go the entire 5 days I was there, my eating habits were few and far between. I did not get to experience the variety of cuisines on offer as I would have liked, but one place did stand out. Chipotle is a fast food mexican - which offers tasty vegetarian burritos. The portions are huge and great value for money. You can choose from a range of filling, but I decided to go the full hog and asked for both rice and black beans. They have a range of salsas to choose from, which includes spicy to tangy. Finally, add some jalapeno tobasco sauce, and you are good to go.

HONG KONG

Vegetarian friendly restaurants in Hong Kong:

BOMBAY DREAMS (Location: 1/F, 75-77 Carfield Commercial Building, Wyndham Street)

I found it quite difficult to find vegetarian friendly restaurants in Hong Kong which offered tasty food, but at the same time was reasonably priced. That is until I found this little gem. Bombay Dreams is tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong. It offers a wide variety of vegetarian indian dishes including the usual palak paneer, channa masala and a range of daals. The restaurant is nicely decorated with friendly staff on hand. The prices are reasonable (well, reasonable by Hong Kong standards), so all in all it is worth a visit should you be craving a good 'indian'.

 ZURICH

Vegetarian friendly restaurants in Zurich

WHITE ELEPHANT (Location: Marriott Hotel, Neumühlequai 42, 8001 Zürich)

On a recent visit to, I came across this Thai in the Marriott hotel. The restaurant offers a tasty (and spicy) soup, just what the doctor ordered if like me you visit during the winter months. There is also a range of main dishes from green and red curry to a tofu dish. The staff are extremely friendly, but be prepared to wait as service can be slow. The cost of the meal is expensive, I spent £35 for a soup, main, rice and a soft drink but I was just glad to find a tasty meal that was not pasta, pizza or anything with cheese!
